Did you read this post I wrote in November? What Your Mother Never Told You About Running Marathons
Was any part of it a bit much? If so, you might want to skip this one and wait for the next giveaway. Seriously.
Ok.
Still here?
You were warned!
Oh and if you are kind of grossed out by your own body and it's natural functions, you should skip this giveaway and wait for the next one. Ok?
Ok....
The post I mentioned is the most popular post on this blog. It exceeds the second most popular post by thousands of views. It was featured on BlogHer and I suspect that one particular topic grossed people out more than any of the others.
One detail I keep track of when I'm training for a race is my menstrual cycle. (Normally I barely track it.) I know I can't change anything about it (I am one of those anti-birth control people- don't judge- I ain't judging the pro-birth control folk- this is my body and my choice, holla, right?) but I like to be mentally prepared for amount of fluid that will be leaving my body whether I want it to or not. Especially if I am going to be running for more than 2 hours.
Where on earth could I keep extra tampons? How could I possibly stay focused on running when I'm continuously worried that I might drop these things or sweat so much that while they are in my pocket they... oh dear... I think you get the idea. And pads are out of the question. My underwear ends up drenched in sweat by mile 10. What do you suppose would happen if I were wearing a... never mind. Graphic detail is left to your imagination. Yikes. That's even too gross for me... Sorry.
But ya know what? It's not my problem.
In that post, there was a link to Instead Softcups. You're wondering what the heck that could be, right?
It's an alternative solution for period protection. It's exactly what it sounds like. It's a soft cup. And yes. It goes in there. Hey, it's likely that your mother or your grandmother used to shove a giant diaphragm in there, so this is not a totally foreign concept.
Now before you go over thinking this, let me tell a few very significant facts:
You can leave this thing alone for twelve hours. Yes. Twelve hours.
This will not mess with your body's pH levels. So if you're prone to pH problems (like yeast infections) this may be a preventative solution for you.
There have been no reports of TSS (toxic shock syndrome) associated with Instead Softcups.
You may be able to wear it during intercourse. (From what I understand, this depends on the... ahem.... anatomy of your partner.)
There are many other reasons why Instead Softcups are superior to tampons and pads and you can read about them here.
I have been using these for about five years. Since this (much like the epilator I just gave away) is an unfamiliar concept, here are some of the conveniences that Instead Softcups have brought to my life:
I only need one during my entire work day. I am never afraid of any embarrassing... accidents...
I can run, swim, hang out, whatever and not even think about my period.
It seems to shorten the duration of my period. Really. I have occasionally used tampons in the last few years, and it seems as though I have more heavy flow days with tampons. (Probably because an over-saturated tampon turns into more of a cork- sorry, yeah I know.... Super gross...) With Instead Softcups, I only have one.
I have yet to run a full marathon during my period (thank goodness) but I did run a couple of half marathons and a ten miler. I was glad that I was not the person that left a tampon in the porta-john. Changing a tampon in a porta-john must be a bit of a stunt, come to think of it...
Some of the inconveniences of the Instead Softcup:
You need a few trials with these things before you master them. It took me a couple of cycles before I could get the placement right.
If you can't remember whether or not you uhhh... inserted one, it's a bit tricky to check. I'll let you finish that thought on your own.
These are not sold at every drug store. They can be a bit hard to find. So if you find yourself without any in your purse, you may have to resort to an impulse tampon purchase.
I have yet to find a way to conveniently change this thing in a public restroom.
And yes, changing/removing/emptying this thing can be a bit messy when you are first getting used to it.
So you guessed it. I think everyone should try this product. And so do the people who make Instead Softcups. So they gave me a few boxes (MASSIVE BOXES WITH 24 IN EACH) to give away. Uhhh.... Want one? You are curious. Even if you think this is kind of gross, admit it. You're curious. You kind of want to try them.
Here's how to win one: Tell me about one of the best days of your life. BUT don't use your wedding day or the birth of a child. Those are standard issue and a bit cliche. (yawn) Something else. Your seventh birthday? When you hit that home run? When you came out? Your first kiss? I'll pick a few winners.
Men are not excluded!(I will assume you are attempting to snag a box for your wife/girlfriend but if not, you must let us all know what on earth you intend to do with these)
I wonder if the responses will be light...
I was led here by Softcups facebook... :)
ReplyDeleteI am soooooo curious about this product!! So this is great!
Anyways hmm, one of the best days of my life- it has to be when my boyfriend and I roadtrip'ed down to Georgia to visit his aunt and just to get away. She lived by an extremely huge and beautiful park. We went there one sunny afternoon and just got lost in it. Either of us was nervous, we just let ourselves get lost. We enjoyed being in nature and chatting about anything and everything.
Simple yet enough for me :)
I love both this blog and Softcups (for entirely different reasons). I can tell you that softcups work extremely well for me though it took me a bit to completely get used to them and how they fit. I definitely say go for it. I went from needing double protection every 1-2 hours to a softcup and a light pad (probably tmi, but I really like the product) for a full's day work.
Deletethe best day of my life was when my soon to be husband told me he loved me after a year and a half of dating each other! I had said i love you almost a year before but, he wanted to be extra sure before he said those words and the wait was well worth it. shortly after that, we had to face his one year deployment to iraq and those three words helped me make it through it all!!
ReplyDeleteBest day of my life -traveling to India and jumping into the Ganges RIver- very spiritually healing!
ReplyDeleteYears ago when my husband were mearly good friends, we took a three week, 4800 mile, 20 state road trip. On the very first day of the trip, we were driving across upstate New York and had stopped by a river to eat lunch. While chatting I said, "you ever been to Niagra Falls?" and he replied "no, have you?" "nope" was my reply. Next thing we know, we've changed our course of direction and headed toward the falls....a few hours later we were taking it all in...it was GORGEOUS! While the rest of the trip was quite an adventure full of curious side trips, that day was the best because it was the beginning of it all!
ReplyDeleteSo far, yesterday was the greatest day of my life! After a not so great day at work, I drove myself to spin class in West Hollywood. After the class, I inquired if they were still hiring since they just opened- the gal responded "for spin instructors?".
ReplyDeleteThis may seem like a normal thing for a student of a spin class to be mistaken for a teacher, but not when you know the back story that last year this time I weighed 80 pounds more than I do today. Through hard work, eating right, and actually caring for myself and my body I have not only lost the weight but have grown to love myself.
This transformation is more than just about the weight, it's about really loving yourself and knowing that with just one step anything is possible. Today, it's clear to everyone but most importantly to myself, that I am truly a warrior.
The best day of my life was May 15, 2010 when at age 39 I walked across the stage and received my diploma - even though I hadn't graduated High School I had not only graduated college but graduated with High Honors. I was in a predominantly male major (98% male) and in class with kids the same age as my own 2 boys. No one ever believed in me but me, I was told that I'd never amount to anything but I never gave up because I knew that I was capable of so much more. When I got the opportunity to attend college, I worked my butt off and proved to everyone that THEY were wrong and I was right that I could do it & I did.
ReplyDeleteSince wedding day and birth(s) are out which would by far be the ranking ones in my life I have to say that another day that has to be among my favorites is the day that, my now husband, this cute guy I thought I would perpetually be "just friends" with told me he loved me and that he wanted me to consider being a bigger part of his life... you see my guy is one of the rare ones who wanted the woman in his life to know that he was not out to play games but that he was serious... he found out I was moving and it hit him that he didn't want to lose what our friendship and what I, personally, meant to him in his life. So he took me out to dinner and afterwards he shared his heart towards me and thus began our romance. Nine years later we're still very much in love. Thanks for encouraging my mind to wander through wonderful memories.
ReplyDeleteWow There are so many great moments- even besides the Birthday and anniversary. So I had to choose between two- my first half marathon or the day my daughter awoke from a radical brain surgery - both had me blubbering happy tears. I think I will choose my daughter. She had a radical brain surgery to stop her seizures on 22 NOV 2010, and not only was I blubbering tears of happiness when she woke up and recognized us (there is always a risk with brain surgery something bad could happen), it is still one of the greatest days of my life because to this day- over a year and a haf later, she is still seizure free! (But the Half Marathon was special too! Maybe for the next contest!)

One more reason I am soooo lucky to be a guy.....

I think the best day of my life (and can't wait until the day comes again) when I stepped on the scale and saw that I had lost 100 lbs. I had worked for three years for that moment. I had changed how I saw food and what I ate, not just dieted. I began being active, slowly at first, the pushing myself until I could do more. That may not seem like the greatest day when compared to some, but for me, it was validation for my hard work that all started the day my mom went in the hospital and we found out her illnesses were completely preventable.
ReplyDeleteI gained 50 of those lbs back due to medication complications and downright depression. I have only just now reached the point where I'm ready to consistently work towards that day again, knowing that I worked for that day.
